I have drilled it down to three holiday tips for holiday sanity. There are fourteen different religious holidays that are observed in the month of December and beginning of January. That’s right fourteen! And with that comes buying gifts, wrapping gifts, holiday parties, religious gatherings and holiday meals with family and friends (and sometimes with people you don’t even know). It’s a flurry of activity. I am not gonna lie to you, it is not my favorite time of year. I find that my busy schedule is compounded with an overkill of Christmas cheer. Feel that way too? Read on, I have some life coaching tips for you.
I know, duh. But then again, I would catch myself accepting invitations, running errands or buying gifts for people I didn’t even like. It’s called obligation and most of the time it’s self-imposed. My tip? Tell people your holiday dance card is full. This includes neighbors who ask you to watch their toddler, so they can attend a holiday party. Trust me on this. I agreed to watch the toddler, and it was a holiday horror story. The little one cried and screamed for four hours. She missed her mommy and her bed. Listen to your gut, if he doesn’t feel right then don’t be afraid to turn up the music and dance with yourself. If it’s good enough for Billy Idol, it’s good enough for me.
Tis the season of giving, especially at the office. One year I shelled out over $200 at the office. What for? The employee gift exchange, the managers gift, pajamas for a charity, holiday luncheon and a variety of school fundraisers. I am a very giving person, but it was just too much. So, at the January team meeting I asked how we could change our holiday gift giving. There was a collective sigh of relief, except for the two who had organized everything. For them, this was how it was always done, so why change it? I played the majority rules card and took a vote. The next year we did a potluck and a white elephant gift exchange. No one missed shelling out their money. So, be a helpful elf at the office, if you see spending getting out of hand, share tip one and two with the office crew.
I will admit this tip is the hardest for me. I am a bad ass unicorn and therefore can do it all. And when you have twelve guests coming to dinner it can be overwhelming. Grocery shopping, cooking and setting the table can be a two-day affair. I too want to enjoy the holidays instead of being a working elf. Trust me, no one will think less of you if you ask them to bring a side dish, or wine, or dessert. They will be happy to do it. So, all you need to do is purchase and make the holiday ham or turkey. Ask your children to set the table and turn on the holiday lights. Don’t have a child? Hire a couple ‘em. After all you saved quite a bit of money at the office this year.
